When someone asks, over the Internet, where he can find a specific option on a program's interface, the best way to answer is to send him a screenshot. You can do this the traditional way, by pressing the PrintScreen key, pasting the image in MS Paint and saving it on the hard drive or you can opt for an easier approach. Greenshot will automatically perform an action of your choosing. After taking a screenshot, it will save the image on your hard drive, open it with its own editor, print it and more.

The application is free and it is not difficult to install on your computer. It works with most Windows versions, without using too many resources. The setup file is 544 Kb large, which can be downloaded fast, with any type of Internet connection.

While Greenshot is running, you can use different hot keys to capture the screen in various ways. The software lets you capture the whole screen, a region, using a rectangle tool, the last captured region or a window. When drawing a rectangle, its dimensions will be displayed, in pixels, on its center, as well as its upper and left edges.

When you take a screenshot, the software will load it automatically in a window, where you will find a series of basic editing options, for drawing arrows, lines and other shapes, highlighting objects, cropping the image and more. You will find a wide range of configuration options in the general settings window. You may select a different output format, quality, and path. It is also possible to select other destinations, such as the clipboard, printer, email and more.

If you right click the system tray icon, it will reveal options for each type of screenshot, along with their designated hot keys. You will find other useful options as well. Images can be loaded immediately on the interface, from a file or the clipboard. A series of quick preferences can be selected in the same context menu. By navigating through a few sub-menus, you will be able to set the program to save the screenshot on the clipboard, save it using your preferred output settings, select various print options and more.

Pros

Greenshot lets you capture the whole screen, regions or windows. It can be used with both hot keys and options from a context menu and you can also select important output and printing options fast and easy. Another reason to try Greenshot is the fact that it is free and it can be installed fast.

Cons

You can not set up your own hot key. Taking snapshots of your screen can be done with greater ease and comfort, when using Greenshot's smart features.
